Forgiveness

Forgiveness is an issue that seems to come up all too often. Why is it that we have such a hard time forgiving others and ourselves?

Bitterness is a condition of the spirit that takes root when a wrong has been done to a person. Instead of forgiving the wrong, the person clings to it, determined that the person or people responsible would pay for what they did. It could be something that happened years ago, or days ago, but when you cling to it and are set on seeing the punishment of the one who caused the hurt, you are being bitter.

Bitterness causes depression. It also cause ulcers and stomach problems along with a large list of other physical afflictions that WE cause on OURSELVES from not forgiving. The question is not why should we forgive the person who caused wrong- after all, they hurt us and most likely it was not our fault at all. However, HaShem still tells us that we are to bless our enemies and to forgive. Why? Well, the Word tells us that when we are nice to our enemies and those who hate us, it reaps coal on their heads. Obviously, there is more to forgiveness than just emotions. But still, why on earth do we have to put up with those who harm us, hurt our feelings and constantly make us feel bad?

The answer to this is “soul correction”. HaShem has placed these type of people in our lives as a stumbling block to make us praise Him. If we past the test, HaShem normally either makes the hurt and pain leave us or He makes the people stop or go away. If we continue to be bitter and unforgiving towards the other person’s wrongdoing- HaShem almost on purpose will let them continue to harm us or stay hurtful things until we get ourselves right before the Lord.

Think about it, are we not worth the trouble that it takes to correct our soul? Doesn’t HaShem love us so much that He allows these roadblocks to get in our way- to further us down the straight and narrow path. Count it all blessings when people offend. Don’t get caught in the game of bitterness. You will never win- but you will get depressed and bitter and angry and look bad because of it. Even a few scientist tell us that cancer can be from forgiveness issues…

So cheer up and learn to forgive. When we don’t forgive, we cause negative things to happen to ourselves and we cause whoever is making us upset to continue to do so until we pass our test from HaShem. So if you remain bitter- don’t blame G-d when something happens to your health. Blame yourself for not passing the test. When we endure these tests of life, we are rewarded with crowns of righteousness and faith! Plus a reward that HaShem will finally remove what is testing us! Isn’t that a blessing in itself? I know for a fact that this principal is true because it has happened to me. Why fret and get angry all the time when people wrong me? Instead, ignore it, praise G-d for the test and He quickly will remove it because my focus is not on the person wronging me, but instead it’s on G-d and His mercy and judgments instead of my own vengeance!
